What is the ego, and how does it affect us?

The ego acts out of fear, control, and comparison. Although it tries to protect you, it ultimately disconnects you from your true essence and inner peace and makes you worry about the future.

How does the ego affect us in our daily life?

The ego can manifest itself in your day-to-day life in many ways. You may identify with any of these symptoms:

  • Constant comparison: Do you measure your value based on what others have or have achieved? This can lead to dissatisfaction and jealousy.
  • Fear of change or failure: Do you feel paralyzed when stepping out of your comfort zone? The ego fears the unknown and prefers that you stay where you are.
  • Excessive control: Do you try to control situations, people, or outcomes to feel safe? This can be exhausting and takes you away from your confidence in life.
  • Looking for external approval: Do you care too much about what others think of you? The ego seeks constant validation to feel important.

Do you identify with any of these behaviors? If so, I want you to know that you are not alone. We’ve all been there. The good news is that you can learn to manage your ego and regain your inner peace.

How to manage your ego with Ho’oponopono

Ho’oponopono became famous for four phrases:

“I’m sorry, please forgive me. Thank you. I love you.”

Every time you repeat them, you clear the memories behind your thoughts and emotions. You don’t need to understand how it works; you just need to trust the process. These memories are always playing in your subconscious mind.

For example, when you find yourself in a situation where the ego wants to control everything or during a conflict, you can mentally repeat these words or any of the Ho’oponopono tools. Gradually, you will feel how the tension subsides and how you begin to act from a place of peace and love.

In Ho’oponopono, we use tools or, as some call them, “trigger words” to help us let go and erase those limiting beliefs.

All the tools work for everything. They are interchangeable. Some of my favorites are:

“Dewdrops” because it was the first easy tool Ihaleakalá received; therefore, it was the first easy tool I‘ve received. “Flypaper” was the tool I gave my eldest son, who had a difficult relationship, and not even he could believe how it helped him during a big discussion. I use it a lot when I travel by plane, and many of my students lost their fear of flying by plane thanks to the “flypaper.” You may also repeat mentally “light switch” to turn on the light to the problems in your life. Remember that the problem is that the light is off.

Practices I recommend managing the ego

In order to live more from your soul, I want to recommend these simple practices:

  • Constant cleaning: Don’t get hooked on negative thoughts or emotions that disconnect you from your inner peace. Repeat “thank you” or “I love you” mentally, and don’t let them control you.
  • Gratitude: In difficult times, think about the things you are grateful for. There is always a blessing behind every problem. Remember, we are here to grow.
  • Trust Divinity: Choose to clean and let go of control. Allow inspiration to guide you. Have faith. You’re not alone.
  • Silence and meditation: Take a few minutes daily to observe your thoughts without judging them. This calms the mind and reduces the noise of the ego. Become the observer and realize you are not those limiting beliefs and thoughts.

By the way, I am taking this opportunity to invite you to my monthly Ho’oponopono class, where I will teach you how to use Ho’oponopono tools effectively, and you will be able to enjoy many resources and a very committed and amazing community.

How to let go and trust more

Ho’oponopono helps you change this dynamic. Whenever you have a conflict, mentally repeat “thank you” or “I love you” or any of the Ho’oponopono tools you know instead of talking and arguing.

Not only does this erase your own memories, but it also erases those memories in common with the other person. What is erased from you is erased from others. When you change, everything changes.

Repeat “let go and trust,” and be thankful for the abundance you already have, even if it seems small. Gratitude is key to opening doors to more opportunities. Don’t focus on what you think you’re lacking.

I know that sometimes it can be hard to let go of control, especially when the ego wants everything to go “perfect.” But I want to invite you to trust the process of life. Ho’oponopono teaches you that you don’t need to know why or how things will be resolved; you need to let go and let Divinity do the transmutation.

Before you make an important decision, pay attention to your heart and how it feels in your body. That way, you have more chances to come from inspiration, not memories. Let go of your thoughts using the Ho’oponopono tools. This will allow you to act from a place of peace and authenticity.
