If you spend enough time around me, you probably know how often I suggest we should all slow down and smell the roses—to take time to pause, live in the moment and just be. It is in this quiet space where we will find peace, along with the answers and direction to most of life’s problems. But, today, my friends, I’m switching things up.
I want us to get busy.
The fact is, I think getting busy (done right) is the perfect antidote to relieve the stress and anxiety we are all feeling in the world today. More than that, I believe being busy is a surefire way to eliminate anxiety while simultaneously bringing more peace, purpose, and meaning into our lives. They go hand-in-hand. Let me show you how you can transform busyness into a “new you” in this month’s special Q&A:
Of course, from a spiritual perspective, you may be skeptically asking yourself how keeping busy can eliminate anxiety in our lives. Well, first of all, let’s not confuse being busy with idle motion, unconscious movement, or a desire “to do” for the sake of seeing how much we can get done. This is not a competition to feed our ego. This is an exercise in focus and choosing where we will put our attention. We can “Be Busy” and “At Zero” in the same breath.
Anxiety is the mind run amuck with too much fear and worry. Too many thoughts! And if this feels overwhelming, you should remember this fundamental law of psychology: It is impossible for any human mind, no matter how brilliant, to think of more than one thing at any given time. Go ahead, try it for yourself. It’s impossible. And the same is true of our emotions. We cannot be excited and enthusiastic about doing something and feel dragged down by worry at the very same time. One kind of emotion drives out the other.
Of course, telling our mind to think about only one thing is easier said than done. We need to use action and “busyness” to jumpstart ourselves. Not sure how to do this? Don’t worry, I will show how to “lose yourself” in action, but in a conscious way that feeds not only the troubled mind but the heart that is seeking purpose and meaning. You see, my friend, it’s not enough to eliminate anxiety unless you replace it with peace—unless you find yourself and your purpose.
So, what do you say? Let’s put on our running shoes. It’s time to get busy doing all those things we love to do, or have always wanted to do, or have been called to do. It’s time to focus on these things with divine love and purposeful action, until the anxiety within slowly disappears, and all that is left is you—who you really are—happy, content, and at peace.
